Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who invoked the Emergencies Act to suppress the right to protest from participants of the Freedom Convoy said on Monday that protesting should always be legal in a "safe and responsible way."

The prime minister made the comment while in British Columbia, during an announcement on electric vehicles in Canada.

"I can't remember a trip to Victoria City Hall in which there weren't a few people expressing their concerns about some issue or other," said Trudeau.

"It's really important that Canadians continue to be able to come out and express their views, express their disagreement with government. Protests should always be legal, should be legal in a safe and responsible way, and that's exactly what we're going to continue to encourage," he said on Monday.

Protestors in Ottawa were cleared from the capital city on February 20 after the invoking of the Emergencies Act. This was made possible because politicians framed the event as one of violence. No violence occurred, however. Ottawa police recently clarified that both arson suspects in the attempt to burn an apartment building down had no connection with the Freedom Convoy.
