A video has gone viral on social media that appears to show a masked Victoria police officer attempting to apprehend a young woman by choking her before dragging her to the ground.

The New Daily reported that the footage was captured by one bystander and a number of other witnesses in a nearby apartment.

The start of the video begins by showing the Victorian police officer with his gloved hands around the young woman's neck, pulling her down a sidewalk along a Melbourne street.

The unidentified woman can be heard saying "he's f**king choking me ... he's choking me" before attempting to punch the male police officer and kicking a female officer standing off to the side. The woman proceeds to say "f**k you b**ch."

The woman added: "What the f**k are you doing to me? What have I done? What have I done?" before being spun around onto the pavement.

The male officer proceeded to sit on the woman for more than 4 minutes as he attempted to arrest her.

The New Daily reported that the Victoria Police issued a statement about the 21-year-old woman, stating that she had been charged with "resisting and assaulting police."

She was eventually brought into custody after refusing to provide her name and address.

Though there is no indication that the woman in the video is part of a small group known in Victoria as "anti-maskers," it is possible as this small group has been known to "bait" police officers and then filming the interaction, The New Daily noted earlier this month.

Further into the video a man can be heard saying that the woman was given an exemption in wearing a mask by a medical physician the day prior, adding that "you're choking her ... There's a man on a girl and you choked her. For what? For not wearing a mask?"

"She's got a note from the doctor," the man says a bit later when a separate group of Victoria Police officers make it to the scene.

The New Daily reported that a total of 270 people have been fined for breaking coronavirus restrictions in Victoria. Victoria Police have also conducted over 3,800 spot checks in homes, businesses, and public places.

Seventy-four people have been hit with a fine of $1,652 for breaking Melbourne's curfew protocol and 37 have been given a $200 fine for not wearing mask.
