'We own the street': Chicago teens attack couple, causing woman to lose unborn baby

A couple was out on a date in Chicago on Friday night when they were reportedly surrounded by a group of teens who said "we own the street" and attacked them. The husband and wife were in the Streeterville neighbordhood near Grand Avenue and McClug Court when the teens approached. 

Local Fox affiliate 32 spoke to Nina, the woman of the couple, who said the pair "were kicked, stomped on and punched repeatedly." As a result, she said, she lost her baby. "We believe in faith and it wasn't meant to be. So, we don't know why this happened to us," Nina said.

The woman, who declined to show her face, showed photos to Fox that revealed a laceration to her face as well as a chunk of hair that had been ripped out of her head. She told the outlet that her husband was held restrained by the group of teens during the attack and suffered a beating himself.

The woman said that she was pepper sprayed and kicked in the stomach as well. "They didn't steal anything," she said. "They say like, ‘we own the street. We own the street. You can't walk around.’ I was wearing like a nice dress and heels. Like I was out on the date with my husband, and they dragged my dress on the ground, and they said, like, ‘we own the street. You can’t just walk around prancing in your little dress.’ And they were saying things that just didn't make any sense to me because they don't know me personally."

Officers responded to the scene at about 9:17 pm and said that a 14-year-old male offender had struck the 40-year old male and that a 17-year-old female had pulled the woman's hair. The couple were treated at the scene of the incident but declined further treatment. The two teens were charged with one count each of misdeanor battery.
