A Winnipeg woman politely asked an officer of the Winnipeg Police why he wasn't wearing a mask, and the driver of the car nearly wound up getting ticketed for it.

"@wpgpolice what is this? Just happened to a friend of a friend. Power trip much? He was very close to them @Mayor_Bowman @BrianPallister @ctvwinnipeg"

According to Global News, the video in the above tweet appears to have been shot by the woman, who is the passenger in a car with a male driver. She speaks off-camera, after the unmasked officer approaches the car and the masked driver.

"Sir, I just have a question. Why are you not wearing your mask, and you’re yelling? That’s not good, that’s not safe."

"I’m not within six feet of you, and you know what? If you want to do (it) that way, I’ll just write a ticket, is that the way you want to do this?" asks the officer. He is clearly less than six feet away in the video.

The officer continues "Just give me your stuff back… you were going to get a warning, I was being polite, you’re not being polite, so…"

People in Winnipeg are currently required to wear masks at all times in public, including outdoors. There is no exception for law enforcement officers. Fines of up to $1,200 are being regularly issued for breaking this law. For this reason, critics are concerned about the officer's behaviour, and worried about uneven enforcement as the lockdown continues.

The Winnipeg Police Department so far as responded with the following:

"We're aware of a video circulating on social media showing a WPS officer during a recent traffic stop. The officer has been spoken to about his conduct by his commanding officer. Attempts are being made to speak w/the driver in question."
