WNBA player who brutally attacked Sophie Cunningham has fan removed over 'unfounded' accusation, hits two other players in face

A fan was removed and escorted from his seat during Wednesday night’s Chicago Sky game against the Golden State Valkyries after DiJonai Carrington complained to officials about him, but he was later allowed to return after the complaint was deemed “unfounded.” The incident occurred during the 4th quarter as Carrington approached an official while arena and team security became involved.

The USA Network broadcast captured part of the exchange. “So, there is a stoppage right now as Chicago’s team security has stepped out along with arena security representatives,” the broadcast said. “Carrington went over to one of the officials, as you see Sarah Williams there, to say something.” A Valkyries official later confirmed the fan had cooperated with security before being permitted to return to his seat.

“The fan was cooperative after a complaint that was unfounded,” a Valkyries official told ClutchPoints. It remains unclear what Carrington alleged the fan had said or done.

The incident came just days after Carrington was ejected from a game against the Indiana Fever following a flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham. Carrington was also involved in a separate incident Wednesday night, when she slapped two players across the face and received a technical foul.

Against Golden State, Carrington struggled offensively, going 1-for-9 from the field.

Carrington also drew attention earlier this month after posting “white privilege” on social media following her ejection against Indiana. She later said the post was not referring to the hard foul she committed against Cunningham, but she has not publicly provided a detailed explanation of what she meant by the phrase.

The specific nature of her complaint against the fan has not been made public. The fan ultimately returned to the game after security determined that the complaint against him was unfounded.
