Workers were spotted assembling a mobile field hospital in the parking lot of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto in preparation for a potential third wave of the coronavirus.

The 100-bed facility is one of two mobile field hospitals promised by the Trudeau government being set up in Sunnybrook's parking lot is one of the promised facilities, CTV news Toronto learned Monday, and is meant to help bolster the region’s health-care system against being overwhelmed.

According to CP24, the federal government has contracted Weatherhaven Global Resources to build the facilities which will contain ventilators, oxygen machines, portable x-ray machines, as well as a negative-pressure system. The facility is expected to be online by April and to remain on site through May.

Dr. Michael Warner, director of critical care at Michael Garron Hospital, told CP24 that "Wave three, I believe, is upon us.” Warner called for those who are at greatest risk of serious health implications from the virus to be vaccinated first.

Despite a provincewide lockdown, case counts and hospitalizations have been on the rise again in both Ontario and Toronto.

According to Critical Care Services Ontario, Monday night, 344 COVID-19 patients were recorded in Ontario Intensive Care Units, the highest number of coronavirus patients in the ICU since January.
