There are two new deaths from the coronavirus in Ontario along with 100 new cases, making for over 100 new cases per day for five days in a row.

The new deaths bring the total death toll in the province to 2800. 37,748 people have recovered to date from the virus.

Ontario is currently performing new tests for the virus at the rate of approximately 20,000 per day, which is slightly down from last week’s statistics of approximately 23,000.

Currently, 39 people are hospitalized for the virus throughout Ontario, with 13 of them being in intensive care, and ten of those 13 requiring ventilators. Previous numbers were 40, 10 and seven respectively.

Some experts are claiming the move to Stage 3 of the quarantine is the reason for the marked increase in new infections. Others claim it has more to do with illegal activity where people break the quarantine rules, such as house parties.

The Ontario Department of Public Health says that they are concerned because the transmission factor has shot up and is now over an R0 (R-naught) of 1.0 What this means in layperson's terms is that, on average, every person who contracts the virus spreads it to at least one other person before no longer being contagious.

The vast majority of the new cases, as previously, have been reported in only 4 out of Ontario’s 34 units. 12 of the other 30 public health units reported five or fewer cases, with 18 of them reporting no new cases whatsoever.
