According to police, the suspect was shot and killed by a security guard.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call Tuesday night at approximately 6:30 pm near the intersection of 7th Street and Figueroa Street.
According to LAPD Chief Michel Moore, the suspect, described as 40-years-old and homeless, walked into the store, grabbed a large butcher-style knife from a shelf, and allegedly told the boy he was going to kill him. When the boy tried to walk away, the suspect stabbed the child in the back.
The suspect then walked to another part of the store where he stabbed a 25-year-old woman in the chest. According to the LAPD, the victims are not related to each other.
The chief said that other shoppers pulled the woman into a pharmacy and closed the gate to protect her.
Moore added that a security guard tried to subdue the attacker with a baton but then shot him. The suspect was declared dead at a hospital.
Both stabbing victims remain in critical condition.
According to a local ABC affiliate, a third person was injured in what Moore called a “stampede" as she and other customers fled the store.
