The good Samaritan who was killed while saving people in Monday's shooting in Arvada, Colorado has been identified as John Hurley, "a true hero" in the words of police and bystanders.

Ronald Troyke, the man who initially opened fire, was killed during the incident, although at the time of this writing it's not clear who killed him. Officer Gordon Beesley of the Arvada Police was also killed in the exchange of gunfire. The details of this incident, which represents yet another shooting with multiple deaths in Colorado this year, are still under investigation, according to authorities.

An unidentified witness said when interviewed:

“He turned back and looked towards everybody at the restaurant and told us that he [the active shooter] is coming, that he is coming back and that we should get inside. I ran to the back of the store, closer to the alley, kind of nooked myself in a corner just to feel safe."

Bill Troyanos, a salesperson who was attending to Hurley right before the incident, said:

"He did not hesitate; he didn’t stand there and think about it. He totally heard the gunfire, went to the door, saw the shooter and immediately ran in that direction."

"I just want to make sure his family knows how heroic he was. I’ve got a pit in my stomach. I mean, just to know that he got killed being that brave."
