“Like, you think about, you’re on Instagram, right, my team has access to my Instagram account, and, like, the things that I actually look at on Instagram, right, of course we get served that on a ‘for you’ page. But then, like, every third video that scrolls on its own is going to be some OnlyFans model. And it’s because it clocked me as being a 40-something-year-old man,” El-Sayed said in the video from The Lever, in which he got a workout in with journalist David Sirota.
Instagram says of its algorithm for recommending content: “We use signals to predict which reels people might like. Signals include user activity like watch time, retention, shares, likes, and comments. We also use audience-matching techniques to compare people with similar interests, because what one person is engaging with can help us learn what someone else might be into.”
It further explains that videos shown in Reels, the tab in which a user can endlessly scroll through videos, are tailored to a user’s activity on the platform, including likes, saves, and comments; their history in interacting with the poster; and the popularity of the poster, content, or audio used in the clip.
El-Sayed was mocked for his comments on social media. Commentator Stephen L Miller wrote, “That's uh, not how the Instagram algorithm works, my guy.”
Investigative reporter Chuck Ross wrote, “Who's going to tell him?”
Daily Wire host Cabot Phillips wrote, “Sir, if your Instagram is flooded with only fans models, there's a reason for that.”
