"I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.”
Stewart, 35, best known for her role in the “Twilight” movies, is eyeing the possibility of moving to Europe, citing her frustrations with President Donald Trump’s policies. Stewart, with a net worth of around $70 million as of January 2026, claimed that she “can’t work freely” in the United States.
“Reality is breaking completely under Trump,” she told the Times. “But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in.” Although she goes back and forth between LA and New York City, she said she doesn't want to stick around. “I can’t work freely there. But I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.”
She said that because of being in the entertainment industry since her childhood, it is how she “relate[s] to the world.”
“I’m always going, ‘How are we going to make that into a movie?’” she added. She also said that tariffs from the president have been “terrifying” for the film industry.
Trump proposed an idea of a 100 percent tariff on movies made outside of the US in September. "Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’ California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!" Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. "Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The proposal has yet to go into effect. Stewart argued that she needs to move to Europe in order to make the movies that she would be interested in.
"It’s a fledgling film culture there. Look, I’m all about the way we make movies here [in the U.S.], but I needed a sort of radical detachment. I am not a director yet. I need to make a student film. I can’t do that here," she said.
