On Independence Day, actress-turned-activist and now congressional hopeful Alyssa Milano trashed America as a nation "founded on the unjust treatment of Native Americans, Africans ... and other people of color."
Milano's embedded text in the TikTok video read, "Reminder: The United States was founded on the unjust treatment of Native Americans, Africans and, and [sic] other people of color." Later in the same video, Milano wrote: "Patriotism is wanting the country you love to live up to its potential."
Also on July 4, she tweeted a quote by American abolitionist Frederick Douglass from the pre-Civil War era when slavery was still legal in the United States:
The above post was made unironically, and without context.
Milano, also on Sunday, re-tweeted NPR's re-posting of the Declaration of Independence with an "editor's note" in it that cites a "racist slur."
Milano's history of tweets consistently promote her very progressive viewpoints:
Milano's activism may in the future go further than her tweets. She told the media on June 4, 2021, that she may even consider a run for Congress against incumbent Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA). Such a move would likely place her in collaboration with other progressives in Congress such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and the rest of what has been dubbed "The Squad."
