Amazon customers in the United Kingdom will not be allowed to use Visa credit cards for payments, according to The Telegraph.

This ban is expected to come into force in January of next year.

Amazon made this decision following a dispute between Visa and the company. This had to do with transaction fees. Amazon sent out an email to their customers blaming Visa for the "high fees" that they charge on transactions.

"The cost of accepting card payments continues to be an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers," said an Amazon spokesperson.

"These costs should be going down over time with technological advancements, but instead they continue to stay high or even rise," they added.

"As a result of Visa’s continued high cost of payments, we regret that Amazon will no longer accept UK-issued Visa credit cards."

Having said that, customers will still be able to use Visa debit cards and non Visa credit cards.

Amazon has so far declined to comment on how many people will be affected by this change in policy, however, tens of millions of people in the UK frequently use the website.

One research firm stated that 9 in 10 British shoppers use Amazon.

A Visa spokesperson said their company was "very disappointed" that Amazon is willing to "restrict consumer choice."
