Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly considering a run for mayor of New York City, as Mayor Eric Adams faces growing criticism amid ongoing investigations into his campaign.

According to a report from the New York Post, sources claim that Cuomo’s supporters are circulating the news, with one prominent banking CEO allegedly informing wealthy donors that the former governor plans to launch a campaign next year.

“His agents are spreading the word. They’re spreading the word that Cuomo is running,” a source revealed.

The potential bid comes as Adams’ administration grapples with declining popularity and federal corruption probes. The investigations have already led to the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban and Adams' chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg.

Cuomo resigned as governor in August 2021 after facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denied. His tenure was also marked by controversy during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly over his administration’s policy of placing recovering COVID-19 patients in nursing homes.

Despite the controversies, a report in July revealed that Cuomo paid a polling firm $68,000 earlier this year to gauge his popularity, hinting at his possible return to politics with a mayoral run.

“[Cuomo] still maintains a massive well of support from New York City and New York City voters despite how the administration ended,” former Cuomo top aide Melissa DeRosa said in a recent interview with Forbes.

A number of Democratic political figures are gearing up to challenge Mayor Adams in the next election. This list includes state Senators Jessica Ramos and Zellnor Myrie, city Comptroller Brad Lander, and former Comptroller Scott Stringer, per the New York Post.
