Entrepreneur and ex-presidential candidate Andrew Yang has officially filed paperwork with the New York City Campaign Finance Board to run for mayor.

Yang has an immense internet following, but didn't do very well in the primaries. However, that following is concentrated in the New York area, to which he is native.

Yang currently polls a full point above his nearest rival, Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough President, according to NBC News, which may have been what prompted him to file the paperwork now.

It is, however, worth noting that 40 percent of NYC-area Democrats at this point are still polling "undecided", and the Democratic primaries won't take place until June 22 of 2021.

Yang's policies while running for president were unusual and some say controversial. One of his main platform points was Universal Basic Income, or UBI. He proposed a national VAT and then a payment of $1000 per month to every citizen over 18 years of age.

Yang has been extremely popular for years in NYC due to his high profile. He started out in the early 2000s as an event and party promoter.
