She said that "this is the microcosm of what authoritarians do on a larger scale."
In a thread of posts issued Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Republican members of the House Oversight Committee for fellow Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s 'devolution of conduct' late Thursday evening in a hearing.
Ocasio-Cortez said that people were "both sidesing" the chaotic hearing, saying that the "problem" with this was that "Republicans VOTED in committee to allow the rhetoric that was used against Ms. Crockett last night. Notice when Dems have the majority, these things don’t happen."
She said that during the markup hearing regarding a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, Democrat members of the House Oversight Committee had seven amendments to present.
"This is where the GOP chaos matters," she said. "AFTER the Republican Chair and GOP members broke official House protocol to allow MTG’s horrific opening solo of rhetoric, they THEN made another change to dispense with the legislative process. THAT part is not getting enough attention."
Ocasio-Cortez said that the committee "cut off the rest of the amendment process, end[ed] all legislative debate, and cut straight to a vote on their text without standard procedure."
She said that "this is the microcosm of what authoritarians do on a larger scale."
"ID a vulnerable person/community that’s easier to break the rules towards, normalize it (often w/ 'both sides' rhetoric), and then use that rule-breaking to undermine deeper processes and rule of law."
"That’s why this stuff isn’t just all-sides chaos, or mere distraction, or a pox on everyone’s house," she concluded. "They WANT you to think this was some random devolution of conduct instead of a structured GOP outcome. We must understand who and what actions created the situation. It matters."
The comment said by Greene that began the chaotic portion of the late-night hearing was her telling Rep Jasmine Crockett, "I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading."
Ocasio-Cortez yelled "that’s disgusting" in response to the comment, later telling Greene when asked if her feelings were "hurt," "Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play."
Crockett later jumped in to ask if a hypothetical question, appearing to be aimed at Greene, would break Congressional protocol.
"I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct," Crockett said.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna asked for Crockett to calm down, which only angered her further.
"If I come and talk sh*t about her y’all gonna have a problem," she said.
