Rep. Alexadria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) spoke in Congress on Ash Wednesday to pay tribue to deaceased trans activist Cecilia Gentili. Genitili's funeral was held the next day at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City that celebrated sex changes, blasphemy, and glorified whoredom in the funeral service.

AOC made the comments last week as she particiapted in the holiday with a cross in ash drawn on her forehead, as is customary at the beginning of Lent in the Catholic tradition.

“I rise today to reflect on the life and legacy of beloved Queens community leader, Cecilia Gentili,” AOC began.

The NYC representative continued to recount the life of Gentili who came to the US as a sex worker and was an illegal immigrant for 10 years before gaining asylum. AOC said that Gentili “lived her truth as a transwoman."

“She devoted much of her life uplifting our trans and undocumented community in Queens,” AOC added in her speech.

The next day, St. Patrick's Cathedral held a funeral for Gentili that which generated backlash over blasphemy performed during the services.

One attendee paying tribute to the passing of Gentili was a self-proclaimed atheist and mocked the St. Cecilia, saying, "This whore. This great whore. St. Cecilia, Mother of all Whores!"

After backlash over the event, the Archdiocese of New York which operates the St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City made a statement condemning the event and said that it was offering an official "Mass of Reparation" to reconsecrate the cathedral.
