The assertion of the two men who took Ahmaud Arbery’s life on February 23 that they did so because they believed him to be a suspect in a series of burglaries has been debunked by local police. It turns out that there was no string of burglaries in the Satilla Springs neighborhood in southern Georgia, though the men attested that there were.
According to police, there were no reported break-ins or burglaries. In fact, Glynn County Police Lt. Cheri Bashlor told CNN that the only reported burglary was on January 1, when an unlocked truck outside the McMichael’s home was liberated of a firearm.
This leaves the two suspects, father and son duo Gregory McMichael and his 34-year-old son Travis, facing charges of murder and aggravated assault. The two were not arrested for the crime until more than two months after Arbery’s death, when a cell phone video came to light on social media, sparking concern across the country that a crime of this magnitude had gone so long without consequence.
Ahmaud Arbery was shot by two men near his home when he was running, taking exercise according to his family. It was around 1 pm on February 23 that he was spotted by the two men as he ran by. These men pursued Arbery in their truck, and shot Arbery after trying to detain him.
The shooting was called a "modern lynching" by the Arbery family’s lawyer S. Lee Merritt. The video footage shows the young, 25-year-old Arbery running from the father and son team, who pursued him in their truck. Arbery tried to defend himself against the two men and their shotgun, but was killed.
Arbery’s father, Marcus Arbery Sr. told CNN, "I just want justice for my son. I just want them to pay the price for the crime they did."
Speaking about the crime, President Trump said that it was "very disturbing."
He went on to say "It's a very disturbing situation to me and my heart goes out to the parents and the family and the friends… It's heartbreaking and it's very rough, rough stuff," he said.
