"Drop it! Throw the knife now. Throw it away!" Perry said.
42-year-old Bradford James Gille was arrested following the stabbing spree and has been charged with 11 counts of assault with intent to murder, and authorities are also seeking terrorism charges against him. Michael Shea, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff, said that Gilles has a previous history of assault as well as controlled substances.
Footage from the scene showed Perry approach Gille, pointing the firearm at the suspect, and demanding that he drop the knife. “Drop it! Throw the knife now. Throw it away!" Perry said.
The video has gone viral online following the incident, with many giving Perry large praise for his actions. The motive of Gilles is not yet known. Of the 11 victims, Munson Healthcare said that seven are in fair condition while four are in serious condition.
The ages of the victims were 29 to 84 years old. One employee at the Walmart was also injured during the stabbing spree, per Fox News. "Over the past 12 hours, we’ve seen encouraging signs of recovery among our patients," the healthcare system said. The hospital system, then praising its staff of doctors and surgeons, said, "Their unwavering commitment and compassion are a testament to the strength and resilience of our healthcare community."
The weapon used was a folding knife in the attack. Witness Tiffany DeFell, 36, told reporters, "It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living."
