Twitter, which has since been renamed X, under CEO Elon Musk initially refused to give prosecutors access to Trump's account, citing concerns with, among other things, an accompanying nondisclosure order prohibiting X from notifying anyone about the existence or contents of the warrant. The company eventually caved and handed over the data. They were subsequently held in contempt and fined $350,000.
"To the extent that the information described in Attachment A is within the possession, custody, or control of Twitter, regardless of whether such information is located within or outside of the United States, and including any emails, records, files, logs, or information that has been deleted but is still available to Twitter, or has been preserved pursuant to a request made under 18 U.S.C. § 2703(f), Twitter is required to disclose the following information to the Government," the warrant stated.
The heavily blacked out document reveals that prosecutors sought access to not only the tweets he sent between October 2020 and January 2021, but accounts he'd blocked, his direct messages, followers, likes, retweets, location data, and search history during that time period as well.In August, Trump was indicted in Washington, DC on four charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and the riot that took place at the Capitol on January 6 the following year, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction, and conspiracy against the right to vote and have one's vote counted. He pleaded not guilty on all four counts.
The case, which is being overseen by Judge Tanya Chutkan, is set to go to trial on March 4, 2024.
