Despite Vice President Kamala Harris sending the message throughout her 2024 campaign that she is pro-Second Amendment, the Biden-Harris administration has declared that now is the time to "ban" so-called "assault weapons."

The Biden-Harris White House account posted on social media on Wednesday, "It's time" with a graphic saying "ban assault weapons."

Harris, however, has tried to paint herself as a supporter of gun rights since she has hit the campaign trail. In her 60 minutes interview: “I have a Glock and I’ve had it for quite some time,” Harris said. “My background is in law enforcement, so there you go.” She was then asked if she fired it ever, to which Harris laughed, claiming, “Yes, of course I have, at a shooting range."

However, laws that Harris has previously supported and advocated for in California would likely have made her claimed firearm illegal in San Francisco when she was the district attorney. She has also consistently backed bans for "high-capacity" magazines. Proposition H in California in 2006, that was backed by Harris, would ban “all City residents, without exception, from selling, distributing, transferring and manufacturing firearms and ammunition," per National Review.

Harris also signed an amicus brief in the DC vs Heller case that argued, “The Second Amendment applies only to federal legislation, not to legislation of the states or local governments,” and that “the Second Amendment provides only a militia-related right to bear arms.”

She has an extensive history of backing anti-gun rights proposals and has supported a mandatory gun buyback program for "assault weapons." Nonetheless, during her campaign, she has claimed that she is not supporting any measure to take "anybody's guns away."

On Oprah, she went as far as to insinuate that if someone breaks into her house, "They gettin' shot." Her campaign later walked back the comment, and claimed that she was only joking.
