US President Joe Biden insists party Democrats want him to run for a second term.
His comments come despite recent polls showing that nearly two-thirds of the party want a different Democratic nominee for the 2024 general election.
"They want me to run," Biden told a reporter, when asked what the president’s response is to Democrats who want him replaced.
"Read the poll," he said. It shows 92 percent of Democrats would vote for him if he ran again, Biden claimed, according to the New York Post.
"A majority of Democrats say they don’t want you to run again in 2024," a member of the press responded. Biden repeated that 92 percent said they would vote for him.
The President was referencing The New York Times/Siena College poll which shows 92 percent of Democrats would vote for Biden if former Republican President Donald Trump was his opponent in 2024. But 64 percent of respondents would prefer the party pick someone different in two years.
Another 94 percent of Democrats under the age of 30 want somebody besides Biden. Biden is 79 and is already the oldest serving president in American history.
When asked why they would prefer a different candidate in 2024, 33 percent of Democrats pointed to his age. Another 32 percent of respondents cited his job performance, 12 percent said they simply prefer someone new, 10 percent said Biden isn’t progressive enough, and 4 percent doubted the president's ability to win re-election.
