Donald Trump trails incumbent President Joe Biden by only seven points in the deep blue state of New York, according to a recent poll. The poll sees support for Trump at 41 percent and Biden at 48 percent support with many independent voters shifting to the 45th president.

According to a new Emerson College Polling/The Hill/PIX11 poll, New York voters are supporting Trump at 41 percent, trailing Biden's 48 percent. Adding third party candidates to the mix, the margin gets even closer, with 38 percent of New York voters supporting Trump and 44 percent of them for Biden. With the third part added in, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has six percent, Cornell West has two percent, and Jill Stein has one percent. 11 percent of the voters are still undecided.

Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling said of the poll, “Independent voters in New York who traditionally vote for Democrats, according to exit polling, have flipped to lean towards Trump by a margin of ten points, 43 percent to 33 percent." The economy and immigration are the top two issues for New York voters.

In comparison to the 2020 election results between Trump and Biden, the incumbent president won the state running away with 60.9 percent to Trump’s 37.8 percent of the vote.

The new poll was conducted between May 28 and 29 in the few days leading up to the Trump conviction with a sample of 1,000 registered voters in the state of New York, with a margin of error of +/- 3%. When asked about the then-potential trial outcome, more independent voters, 37 to 35 percent, said that Trump is not guilty versus guilty of all of the charges. 29 percent of independents said he may be guilty on some counts, but not all of them.

Biden's job approval rating in the state overall, however, is underwater with 39 percent of New Yorkers approving and 50 percent expressing disapproval with Biden as the president.

New York politicians were also asked about in the poll. Democrat New York Governor Kathy Hochul is also in the negative with 43 percent favorable and 48 percent unfavorable. NYC Mayor Eric Adams, likewise, has a 23 percent favorable to 52 percent unfavorable rating with 25 percent of New York voters not being familiar with him. This trend is more telling with New York City voters, with only 30 percent showing a favorable view of Adams and 60 percent showing an unfavorable view of the mayor.

Trump has said that he has planned on making big moves to win the Empire State and has staked campaign rallies in locations such as the Bronx, a move that has not come from a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan.
