Polls released from Rasmussen and Monmouth University on Wednesday showcase a downward trend in President Biden's job approval rating. This comes in the wake of rising inflation, shortages, and lack of middle-class family support.

A Rasmussen daily presidential tracking poll stated that 50 percent of likely voters approve of Biden's job performance, with 48 percent disapproving.

Included in those percentages are the 31 percent who strongly approve of his performance, and 38 percent that strongly disapprove, giving Biden a Presidential Approval Index of -7.

This is a downward trend from the end of May, when 55 percent approved, and 43 percent disapproved.

According to a Monmouth University poll, Biden holds a jobs approval rating of 48 percent, with 43 percent disapproving.

Of those that said Biden was doing good job, 86 percent were Democrats, 36 percent were independents, and just 19 percent were Republicans

Compared to last month, when 54 percent approved and 41 percent disapproved, Biden has seen his rating slowly dwindle in the preceding months.

Monmouth stated that Biden’s recently proposed spending bills, as well as the passage of the American Rescue Plan and concerns over inflation may be to blame for the falling approval rates.

"Biden's rating is still in net positive territory, but it seems to have taken a dip with the growing uncertainty that his signature spending plans will be enacted," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.

"The plans are broadly popular, but the path to getting there is not so clear-cut. This is one of those situations where the administration has to weigh short-term blowback in public opinion against what they hope will be long-term gains," Murray continued.

Of those polled, 47 percent were very concerned about the possibility of Biden's plans leading to inflation and 24 percent were somewhat concerned. Of those that were at least somewhat concerned about inflation, 93 percent of those respondents were Republican, 70 percent were independents, and 55 percent were Democrats.

"Right now, Biden is not quite meeting the public's expectations for helping the middle class. His calculation may be that the country is willing to accept some price increases in return for a more robust economy and wider array of support programs," said Murray.

In addition to concerns over inflation, many surveyed felt that Biden’s policies have yet to help middle-class American families.

"About 1 in 5 (19%) Americans say middle-class families have benefited from Biden's policies a lot and another 32% say they have benefited a little, while 36% say the middle class have not benefited at all. These results are less positive than when Biden first took office. In January, 30% of the public expected the middle class would benefit a lot from his policies, 39% said a little, and 27% said not at all," stated Monmouth University.
