One of the more surprising announcements of Trudeau's new cabinet was that Bardish Chagger was demoted from her position as Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Youth.
Since she was promoted to this position in 2019, Chagger has been outspoken in her defence of the government, particularly during the WE scandal where she faced the indomitable Pierre Poilievre during committee. This, according to most commentators, was not a good look for Chagger.
Despite her loyalty to Trudeau and the Liberal government, Chagger quickly found that it was unrequited.
At one point during the WE scandal, it seemed that the prime minister was ready to throw Chagger under the bus in order to save himself and former Finance Minister Bill Morneau.
Trudeau's decision to demote Chagger despite her loyalty caused some commentators to raise an eyebrow. Writing on Twitter, the former Senior Political Advisor to Andrew Scheer said "let Bardish Chagger be a lesson to all who are considering eating a sh*t sandwich to protect Justin Trudeau and his friends."
"Yeah, don't do that," he added.
Chagger, however, remains undyingly devoted to the prime minister. In her goodbye note, Chagger wrote that she "got involved in politics at 13 years old and never thought I would run for office - let alone serve in Cabinet for six years."
"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve in that capacity. I thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, my cabinet colleagues, and team members for the opportunity."
