A 31-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the death of Toronto police Constable Jeffrey Northrup has been released on bail. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his disgust on the accused permitted bail.
Umar Zameer was released on $335,000 bail.
According to police, Zameer intentionally drove a vehicle into Constable Jeffrey Northup on July 2, in the City Hall parking lot. Northup was pronounced dead after being struck.
"It is very disturbing that the person charged for this heinous crime against a Brampton resident and Toronto Police Officer is now out on bail. This is shameful," wrote Brown.
The conditions of Zameer's bail include being under house arrest and an apparent driving ban. He must also wear an electronic ankle bracelet and surrender his passport.
"Brampton Council has been petitioning the federal government for bail reform, and this is an illustration of why change is desperately needed."
A publication ban prevents discussion on the evidence from the Zameer hearing or the reasons that led the Court to conclude he should get bail.
Brampton City Council's petition began after the Darian Hailey Henderson-Bellman murder.
A 27-year-old Brampton man was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 25-year-old Halton Hills woman with whom he had a relationship.
Darnell Reid was under an interim judicial release in connection with a previous alleged domestic violence incident between Darian Hailey Henderson-Bellman and Reid.
He was arrested four times for breaching the conditions of his release by contacting Henderson-Bellman.
