Actress Teri Garr, known for her roles in Young Frankenstein and Tootsie, died on Tuesday at the age of 79 after a battle with multiple sclerosis. Publicist Heidi Schaeffer told the Associated Press that Garr passed "surrounded by family and friends."

In 2002, Garr revealed that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and in 2006 she suffered an aneurysm, according to Variety.

Garr, who studied acting in New York, started out as a go-go dancer who appeared in six Elvis Presley features as well in the filmed rock concert The TAMI Show. In the 1960s, Garr made appearances on sitcoms like The Andy Griffith Show, Batman, and That Girl.

Garr also appeared on Star Trek, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and One From the Heart, M*A*S*H, and made multiple appearances on The Sonny and Cher Show.

Garr had over 140 credits in film and television and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the 1982 film Tootsie, People reported.
