The Sante Fe Sheriff’s office said in a statement that cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza "...were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor."

According to Variety, Alec Baldwin fired the prop gun on the set of Rust in New Mexico Thursday, accidentally killing Halyna Hutchins and wounding Souza. The movie was filming at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular production location south of Santa Fe.

The Sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting the incident at 1:50 PM Mountain Time. According to investigators, "…it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged."

Deadline previously reported that "...a principal castmember cocked a gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live rounds in it, hitting two people, a man and a woman. The man was hit in the shoulder, while the woman was airlifted to the hospital for stomach surgery."

A Rust Movie Productions LLC production spokesperson told the outlet, "There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care. Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority."

According to the Sheriff’s office, Hutchins, 42, was transported by helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was pronounced dead. Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

The Sheriff’s office added that so far, no one was arrested in the incident, and no charges have been filed. Additionally, Detectives were interviewing witnesses, and the incident remains under an "open and active" investigation.

According to Variety, Hutchins graduated from the American Film Institute in 2015, and was named a "rising star" by American Cinematographer in 2019.

Souza is writing and directing Rust. Baldwin is a co-producer on the film and plays infamous outlaw Rust, who tries to break his 13-year-old grandson out of prison after he is convicted ironically, of an accidental murder.

KOB4’s news helicopter photographed the set located at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location, where the incident occurred. Images showed an old church which appeared to be blocked off. The outlet also reported that production has been stopped on the film and that set security confirmed it is on lockdown.
