Jeanine John Taele, 38, from Downey, California, was arrested outside the Rancho Palos Verdes site by plainclothes FBI officers after they determined that he was engaged in suspicious activity, per the New York Post.
The agents found the man with an illegally modified AR platform rifle, body amor, two radio signal devices, high-capacity magazine, and multiple notebooks that had what was described as "concerning statements." There have been three known previous attempts on the president's life since 2024.
Deputies with the Lomita Sheriff’s Station responded to the golf course at around 3:28 pm on Sunday after the plainclothes officers spotted the suspicious individual walking on the golf course grounds. The man was taking photos and video of the golf course when he was spotted by authorities.
After the deputies made contact with Taele, they discovered that he was under active investigation for robbery by the El Segundo Police Department. When they searched his person, officers found a 16-round magazine with hollow-point ammunition.
Authorities later searched his vehicle, where they found a pistol with round in the chamber with other magazines. He was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm with illegal ammunition. A search warrant was later executed at his home. The case is now under investigation and is being handled by local authorities in conjunction with the Secret Service as well as the FBI. There are no other active threats related to the incident, officials confirmed.
Trump will be arriving in California to talk about his administration's economic record, immigration, and other policies.
Although this incident is not confirmed as of Tuesday to be an attempt to take Trump's life, he has been subject to assassination attempts multiple times before.
On the 2024 campaign trail, Trump was shot by a sniper in Bulter, Pennsylvania during a political rally. Although the bullet only grazed his ear, there were people in the stands behind the shots that lost their lives. The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crookes, was shot and killed by Secret Service in response.
A second attempt on Trump's life happened later during his 2024 campaign, when Ryan Routh was spotted at Trump International Golf Course in Palm Beech Florida during a round of golf for the 45th and 47th president. Routh was hiding in the bushes with a rifle set-up, but was seen by Secret Service agents when he pointed the barrel of the gun through a fence. Agents shot at him but he was able to flee, later being apprehended by local police. Routh was later convicted of attempting to assassinate Trump.
The most recent attempt on Trump's life, aside from the potential of the California incident, came during the White House Correspondence Dinner on April 25. 31-year-old Cole Allen charged a security checkpoint with a rifle but was stopped by Secret Service after an exchange of fire. In a manifesto, Allen said that he was targeting the officials in the administration including Trump.
