The United States Department of State has issued a worldwide caution alert for citizens in the wake of the war that has broken out in Israel after the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched an attack against the nation.

"Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against US citizens and interests, the Department of State advises US citizens overseas to exercise increased caution," the advisory states.

US citizens are urged to "stay alert in locations frequented by tourists," enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, and follow the Department of State’s social media accounts for alerts.

The State Department has also released information for US citizens in the Middle East looking to leave where they are.

For those in Israel, commercial flights are "limited" out of Ben Gurion Airport, and the US government is facilitation charter flights.

"We urge those wishing to leave to take advantage of these charters while they are available," the information states, adding that flight departures from the airport will continue on a rolling basis through at least October 22.

For those within Gaza, the State Department said "The military conflict between Israel and Hamas is ongoing, making identifying departure options for US citizens complex."

"We anticipate that the situation at the Rafah crossing will remain fluid and unpredictable.  If you assess it to be safe, you may wish to move closer to the Rafah border crossing – there may be very little notice if the crossing opens, and it may only open for a limited time."

For US citizens in neighboring Lebanon, which saw part of a US Embassy set on fire, the department said "We recommend that US citizens in Lebanon make appropriate arrangements to leave the country; commercial options currently remain available."

"We recommend that US citizens who choose not to depart prepare contingency plans for emergency situations. "

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
