On Monday, the Biden's US Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the state of Texas over its plan to alter voting districts, claiming that it is illegal because it targets minorities and "weakens" their vote.

"The complaint we filed today alleges that Texas has violated Section Two by creating redistricting plans that deny or abridge the rights of Latino and Black voters to vote on account of their race, color or membership in a language minority group," Merrick Garland, the US Attorney General, stated during a conference.

The new voting district plan for Congress was signed into law by Gov Greg Abbot (R-TX) in Oct. 2021.

According to The Hill, the lawsuit, filed in El Paso's federal courts, "alleges that several districts contained in Texas’s new map were drawn with the specific intent of discriminating against minority voters."

Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta commented further on the matter, saying:

"Our complaint today alleges that the redistricting plans approved by the Texas state legislature and signed into law by the governor will deny black and Latino voters an equal opportunity to participate in the voting process and to elect representatives of their choice in violation of the Voting Rights Act."

"Our complaint also alleges that several of those districts were drawn with discriminatory intent."
