A federal law enforcement agent opened fire on Wednesday after an illegal immigrant rammed law enforcement with his vehicle. While the illegal immigrant was not injured, a Customs and Border Protection agent was, the Department of Homeland Security said.

DHS said that officers with the department were conducting a "targeted operation" in Compton, California to arrest "violent criminal illegal alien" William Eduardo Moran Carballo, of El Salvador. He has two prior arrests for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and is believed to be involved in a human smuggling operation. A judge issued a final order of removal for Carballo in 2019.

"In a dangerous attempt to evade arrest, this criminal illegal alien weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement. Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots. The criminal illegal alien was not hit and attempted to flee on foot. He was successfully apprehended by law enforcement. The illegal alien was not injured, but a CBP officer was injured," DHS said.

DHS added, "These dangerous attempts to evade arrest have surged since sanctuary politicians, including Governor Newsom, have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest and provided guides advising illegal aliens how to recognize ICE, block entry, and defy arrest. Our officers are now facing a 3,200% increase in vehicle attacks."

This comes two weeks after a similar incident in Minneapolis, in which an ICE agent opened fire after activist Renee Good rammed her vehicle into federal law enforcement. Good was killed, sparking protests and unrest in the area.
