Brazilian soccer legend Pele passed away on Thursday at the age of 82 following a lengthy battle with cancer and other illnesses.
Pele, who many regard as one of the greatest athletes of all time, had been receiving care at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo since November 29.
Pele was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021, and though the tumor was removed, he continued to undergo chemotherapy. In the months since, he fell ill with cardiac and renal dysfunction.
On Wednesday, video surfaced showing a bed-ridden Pele bidding farewell to his family.
During his 20-year career, which kicked off playing for Santos in 1957 at the age of fifteen, Pelé scored 757 goals in 831 games.
He won the World Cup with the Brazilian national team in 1958, 1962, and 1970, and is still the only player to date to win three of soccer's most prized trophies.
As the New York Post reports, numerous European clubs tried to woo Pelé to cross the Atlantic and play for them, but he turned them all down, much to the adoration of the Brazilian people.
At the end of his playing career, however, he was in debt, and agreed to a three-year contract with the New York Cosmos.
Nevertheless, he remained a legend in the eyes of Brazilians and fans around the world, and will go down in history as one of the greatest players of all time.
