Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor and GOP candidate that has consistently polled toward the bottom of the field of candidates, announced in a town hall event in New Hampshire on Wednesday that he is dropping out of the race.

This comes ahead of Iowa’s Republican caucus, which will take place on January 15, and is the first of such to take place in the 2024 election cycle.

"It is clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I’m suspending my campaign tonight for President of the United States."

"I want to promise you this," Christie continued. "I’m going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be president of the United States again. And that’s more important than my own personal ambition."

Prior to the town hall event, Christie was caught on a hot mic saying that fellow candidate Nikki Haley is "gonna get smoked" and that "DeSantis called me, petrified that I would —," before the feed was cut.

A University of New Hampshire/CNN poll released on Tuesday of New Hampshire voters found that 65 percent of Christie supporters said they would support Haley if Christie were not in the race.

The poll found that Trump leads with 39 percent of Republican primary voters in the state supporting him and Haley is in a close second at 32 percent. Christie sat at third, with 12 percent support. New Hampshire's primary election will take place on January 23.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
