David DePape was convicted in a San Fransciso court on Thursday on federal crimes. He was accused of breaking into the home of Nancy and Paul Pelosi in 2022, and assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer. Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, DC at the time serving as Speaker of the House.

The trail concluded after four days and the jury deliberated for about 8 hours. DePape, who is 43, awaits sentencing, but could face decades in prison for his crimes. Paul Pelosi also testified at the trial.

The evidence against DePape was so strong that his attorneys did not contest the envidence. There was police body camera footage from officers who responded to the attack at the Pelosi home. DePape also admitted his crimes both to police and from the witness stand. The argument presented by DePape's lawyers instead was this his egregious criminal actions, including breaking and entering and assault, did not amount to federal crimes.

DePape's attorneys argued that while he was intentionally targeting the Speaker's residence, it wasn't due to her action in Congress, but rather due to conspiracy theories and an attempt "to take down a cabal of so-called liberal elites that he saw as a threat to American liberty," The New York Times reports.

"The Pelosi family is very proud of their Pop, who demonstrated extraordinary composure and courage on the night of the attack a year ago and in the courtroom this week. Thankfully, Mr. Pelosi continues to make progress in his recovery," read a statement from the Pelosi family.

The attack occured on October 28, 2022.
