Card's sister told investigators that her brother could have been searching for his ex when he allegedly carried out the mass shooting.
In a Friday morning press conference, Department of Public Safety commissioner Michael Sauschuck revealed that authorities are working through over 530 tips from the public in relation to the mass shooting that occurred on Wednesday evening in Lewiston, Maine.
Sauschuck also revealed that divers will be going into the Androscoggin River in Lisbon where suspect Robert Card’s vehicle was found.
Sauschuck said that air resources will be deployed in the area to search the river "to see what we can clear from the air," and divers will be put in particular areas based on the current or how muddy the water appears.
The commissioner said divers will be searching for potential bodies and evidence in the area, but stressed that "while this is going to look like a major focus today with a lot of people, we have a lot of other irons in the fire."
"So, I’m not saying that the suspect — we know the suspect is in the water, what I’m telling you is you’re going to see a lot of activity there."
On Thursday, law enforcement officers surrounded a home in Bowdoin, Maine, looking for mass shooting suspect Robert Card who has been accused of killing 18 people and injuring 13 others in Lewiston on Wednesday evening. The incident has been described as the deadliest massacre in the US this year, so far.A multi-agency manhunt was launched on Wednesday night to locate Card, a 40-year-old Army reserve firearms instructor, who has been on the run.
Video footage taken by WMUR-TV shows the multi-agency law enforcement task force surrounding a home on Meadow Road in Bowdoin that they believed Card was hiding out in. It's unclear who owns the residence.
"We know you are inside. Come out with your hands up. We don't want to anyone else to get hurt," officers can be heard saying in the video.
Authorities also demanded for anyone else in the home to exit and speak with them, according to the outlet.
Several drones were deployed over the home and authorities placed a spotlight on the residence. They also reportedly directed media in the vicinity to turn off all lights.
On Thursday, authorities found a cryptic note that was left Card's home. Police have been working to find a possible motive and the FBI along with a multi-agency task force descended upon the home of Card's parents in Bowdoin earlier in the day.
Law enforcement officials have not yet released the details on the contents found inside the note, according to NBC New York.
The multi-agency task force descended upon the home of Card's parents, at which they arrived on Thursday evening in SWAT armored vehicles, black SUVs, FBI-branded vehicles, and Maine state police cruisers.
Officers surrounded the rural property, according to NewsNation, and on megaphones said: "FBI. Open the door. FBI. Come out now."
Shannon Moss, a spokesman for Maine state police, told reporters: "Law enforcement is at a home in Bowdoin as part of the investigation into the Lewiston shootings and the search for Robert Card. When it's appropriate to do so, additional information will be released."
Robert Card is accused of allegedly killing 18 people and injuring 13 others in a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine on Wednesday evening. Card went on a shooting spree at multiple locations which included a Walmart distribution center, Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, and Schemengees Bar and Grill.
Card's sister, who did not wish to be identified, told investigators that her brother could have been searching for his ex at those locations, according to ABC. His sister did not disclose if she was referencing his ex-wife who filed for divorce in 2007, according to court documents, or if this was a more recent ex.
She also told investigators that Card was admitted to a mental health facility over the summer after allegedly "hearing voices." He reportedly threatened to shoot up the National Guard Base where he was stationed. Card was released from the mental health facility after two weeks.
Katie Card, Robert's sister-in-law, told the Daily Beast that relatives have been cooperating with police and have been trying to contact Robert via mass texting and phone calls. He has not yet responded, she said.
"I have known Rob my whole life," she said. "He is quiet but the most loving, hardworking, and kind person that I know. But in the past year, he had an acute episode of mental health, and it's been a struggle."
Katie Card told the outlet that Robert was reportedly hearing voices at the bar and bowling alley before he allegedly carried out the massacres.
"He truly believed he was hearing people say things," she added. "This all just happened within the last few months."
Robert Card, who is from Bowdoin, abandoned his vehicle in Lisbon shortly after the shooting, according to authorities.
Investigators stated that to create a timeline of his whereabouts before the shooting, they have been examining cellphone signals, social media, and computer information.
