New York City's test drive of ranked choice voting gave candidate Eric Adams the Democratic primary win in the race that decides the city's next mayor.
According to the Associated Press, the former police captain won the Democrat primary for mayor of New York City. He beat out the likes of "early favorite" and 2020 presidential contender Andrew Yang as well as former members of the NYC political establishment Maya Wiley and Kathryn Garcia.
Meanwhile at CNN, the primary came down to a narrow victory given how the voting results were calculated. The June 22 results had Adams with a comfortable 10-point lead, but by the time the June 30 updated results came out, it was down to a 2.2 percent lead over Garcia.
The report credits the balance in Eric's platform over policing as his way of successfully appealing to centrist moderates. "If Black lives really matter, it can't only be against police abuse. It has to be against the violence that's ripping apart our communities," Adams said on the night of the primary.
The ranked choice system in addition to "tens of thousands" of absentee ballots were initial hurdles in the delay for the voting results. The resulting delay over an error involving more than 100,000 test ballots, thus creating a "discrepancy," had Adams publicly asking about the "irregularities" at the time.
But as of tonight, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is celebrating his win.
According to the Associated Press, he will have no problems when facing off against Republican opponent Curtis Silwa in the Democratic stronghold, citing that "Democrats outnumber Republicans 7-to-1 in New York City."
