The reason for the raid was not immediately known.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations raided the home of Oakland, California Mayor Sheng Thao on Thursday morning.
FBI spokesman Cameron Polan said in a statement, “The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane." He added that no more information could be provided. Property records link the home raided by the FBI to Thao at 80 Maiden Lane, per the San Francisco Chronicle.
Reporting from the outlet indicated that FBI agents stepped out of Thao's home on Thursday morning with a blue light as well as surgical gloves. Law enforcement as well as the federal agency also searched the nearby home of 4320 View Crest Court in the same area. The reason for the raid was not immediately known.
At around 10am, several FBI agents could be seen leaving Thao’s home carrying boxes and bags and then left in their vehicles, per KRON4. They had arrived at Thao’s home to start the raid at around 5:30am.
The other residence that was raided is owned by Andy Duong, according to housing records. Duong's family owns the recycling company Cal Waste Solutions. The company has been investigated over its campaign donations to Thao as well as other elected officials. He did not answer a phone call when the Chronicle reached out to him on Thursday.
FBI agents were going through luggage in the garage when a reporter approached them, however the agents declined to comment on the matter. Thao's spokeswoman referred all inquiries from the Chronicle to the FBI.
