On Friday, the Georgia state Senate voted 30-19 in favor of a resolution to create a special committee to investigate embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis

The committee will investigate allegations that she misused taxpayer funds by engaging in an improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who has spearheaded the election interference case against Donald Trump.

According to 11Alive, while the panel cannot sanction Willis, it can call witnesses under oath and collect evidence.

"The multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis, spanning from allegations of prosecutorial misconduct to questions about the use of public funds and accusations of an unprofessional relationship, underscores the urgency for a thorough and impartial examination," state Sen. Greg Dolezal said upon introducing the legislation earlier this week. "We owe it to the public to ensure transparency, accountability and the preservation of the integrity of our justice system."

The alleged impropriety was first brought to light in a court filing by Trump co-defendant Michael Roman earlier this month. Roman's lawyer, Ashleigh Merchant, claimed that Willis and Wade "have been engaged in an improper, clandestine personal relationship during the pendency of this case, which has resulted in the special prosecutor, and, in turn, the district attorney, profiting significantly from this prosecution at the expense of the taxpayers."

Wade has raked in close to $654,000 for his services since January 2022, compensation that as DA, Willis authorized. He then allegedly used that money to purchas trips for him and Willis to Napa Valley, Florida, and the Caribbean.

Roman argued that if the allegations that Willis hired her lover to be on the prosecutorial team are true, Willis' conduct could potentially warrant a dismissal of the charges against him and disqualification of the entire DA's office from future prosecution of the case.
