Those criminal charges stem from testimony given on February 28, 2024, and are for false statements and perjury.
During that investigation into the "President's role in and knowledge of his family's international influence peddling schemes," they called as witnesses both Biden's brother James Biden and son Hunter Biden to testify under oath. They additional interviewed multiple other witnesses "regarding President Biden's knowledge of and involvement in his family's business dealings."
Those criminal charges stem from testimony given on February 28, 2024, and are for false statements and perjury. The chairmen say that the statements were made "in what appears to be a conscious effort to hinder the investigation's focus on President Joe Biden."
As to what the men reportedly lied about, the chairmen are clear. They say that "Hunter Biden falsely distanced himself from a corporate entity—Rosemont Seneca Bohair, LLC—and its bank account... that was the recipient of millions of dollars from foreign individuals and foreign entities who met with then-Vice President Joe Biden before and after transmitting money to the Rosemont Seneca Bohai Account that then transferred funds to Hunter Biden."
James Biden, the chairmen contend, did meet with a man he said he did not meet with, namely Biden whistleblower Tony Bobulinski. Bobulinski provided text message proof that the meeting did occur.
"Hunter Biden and James Biden made materially false statements to the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee, as demonstrated by the evidence" that was supplied to Garland in the referral attached to the letter. "The nature of these false statements," they write, "is not lost on the Committees: every instance implicated Joe Biden's knowledge of and role in his family's influence peddling."
"Hunter Biden and James Biden," the letter reads, "provided false testimony to the Oversight and the Judiciary Committee, in what appears to be a conscious, calculated effort to insulate Joe Biden from the duly authorized impeachment inquiry."
Through documents and financial records, the House GOP has discovered links between Hunter Biden's shady business dealings and President Joe Biden. Hunter Biden is currently standing trial in Delaware over allegations that he lied on his gun buy background check form, saying that he was not taking or using illegal drugs. He later published a memoir stating that he had been taking and using illegal drugs at the time of the gun purchase.
Hunter Biden had also scoffed at the congressional subpoena demanding that he testify in his father's impeachment inquiry. Instead of complying with the subpoena initially, he spoke from the Capitol lawn, the Senate side, where the House does not have jurisdiction. He later complied under threat of contempt charges.
