"Women deserve women's only spaces," Johnson said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has issued a new edict saying that only women shall have permission to access women's bathrooms on Capitol Hill. The move from Johnson comes after South Carolina Rep Nancy Mace proposed a new rule that would deliver the same result Johnson has provided.
"All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings—such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms—are reserved for individuals of that biological sex," Johnson wrote. "It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol."
"Women deserve women's only spaces," Johnson said.
The issue wouldn't be an issue except that a trans representative from Delaware has been elected and Mace wanted to ensure that she would not be faced with a male in a women's bathroom. She proposed a bill on Monday before saying that were it not taken up, she would move to have it included in the rules for the incoming 119th Congress. "Playing make believe dress up doesn't mean you should be allowed in women's private spaces," Mace said.
Delaware's Sarah McBride, who came out as trans in 2012 and has been presenting as a woman ever since, has said that the people of Delaware want their new rep to focus on those social programs that McBride ran on, such as child care and health care.
McBride said that Mace's attempt to ban males from women's rooms was "a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing."
"I’m not a spokesperson for a movement," McBride said. "I’m a voice for all Delawareans — and when we see the incoming administration talk negatively about any vulnerable community, I guarantee you it’s an attempt to distract from the fact that in that same moment, they are picking the pockets of American workers and fleecing seniors by trying to privatize critical programs like social security and medicare."
After proposing the bill to ban men from women's spaces on Capitol Hill, Mace was targeted by a trans activist who said "I hope that one day I do find you in that woman's bathroom. And I grab your ratty-looking f*cking hair and drag your face down to the floor while I repeatedly bash it in until the blood's everywhere and you're dead."
"I will never allow a man to bully me or any other woman or girl. I am here and I will fight like hell to stop the insanity," Mace said.
Mace and McBride will not be at risk of meeting in the bathroom now that Johnson has made his proclamation, which coincidentally coincided with Transgender Day of Remembrance.
