The jury in Hunter Biden's federal gun trial returned a guilty verdict on Tuesday morning. The 12-person jury in Delaware began deliberating the charges on Monday.

54-year-old Biden faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for the charges of making false statements while purchasing a firearm, making false statements regarding information kept by federal firearms licensed dealers, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The charges stem from Biden's alleged drug use at the time of purchasing the firearm and lying about this drug usage on federal firearm purchase forms. Federal law prohibits users of illicit drugs from possessing firearms.

Biden had acknowledged his drug addiction in his memoir, but his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, argued during the trial that he didn’t "knowingly" lie on the forms as he had recently completed a rehabilitation program and allegedly wasn’t using drugs at the time of the purchase in October 2018.

During the trial, evidence was presented from Biden’s electronic devices showing an April 2018 photo of drugs, as well as text messages about using drugs in the days after he purchased the firearm.

Prosecutor Leo Wise said in his closing arguments on Monday, "The central issue in this case, and that is the evidence has established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance when he bought the gun on Oct. 12, 2018, during the period when he possessed it from Oct. 12 to Oct. 23, and for more than six months after," according to NBC News

"He knew he was using drugs. That’s what the evidence shows. And he knew he was addicted to drugs, that’s what the evidence shows."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
