Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden with two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay his taxes, and reached a plea deal to get a felony gun charge dropped.
Hunter Biden is expected to appear in a Delaware federal court and plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges on Wednesday morning.
Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden with two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay his taxes, and reached a plea deal to get a felony gun charge dropped.
Hunter is set to plead guilty to receiving $1.5 million in taxable income for 2017 and 2018 and failing to pay more than $100,000 in taxes for each of those years.
Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 12 months in prison, but prosecutors are expected to instead recommend probation, per USA Today.
The gun charge relates to an alleged false statement made by Hunter Biden of a federal form when he bought a gun in 2018, stating that he wasn’t an "an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance."
He said he wasn't using drugs, even though he was and later attested to that in his memoir, and obtained the gun illegally. He then lost it and federal agents swooped in to cover up the mess.
President Joe Biden has made opposing firearms a cornerstone of his platform, and has demanded universal background checks for gun purchases. In that case of his own family, those background checks failed to prevent a person who should not legally be able to obtain guns from getting one.
The gun charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
IRS whistleblowers recently testified before Congress that the agency had recommended felony charges in relation to tax violations, but those were later dropped to misdemeanor charges by the Department of Justice.
Hunter is accused of having deducted the cost of flying prostitutes across the country as a business expense.
