Baird is 80 years old.
Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman posted to X, "80-year-old Indiana Rep. Jim Baird is in the hospital after a car crash. So House Republican attendance is a massive, massive problem right now."
Baird is responsive and is in stable condition, per Fox News. Baird has represented Indiana's 4th district in the state since 2019. The district is mainly rural and deals in the agricultural industry. Prior to becoming a member of Congress, Baird was in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018.
His experience also includes being the Putman County commissioner between 2006 and 2010. President Donald Trump said of the crash in televised comments to House Republicans on Tuesday, “They’re going to be OK, but they had a pretty bad accident." At the same time, Trump paid tribute to the late California Rep. Doug LaMalfa who died on Monday.
It was not immediately clear where the crash involving Baird and his wife took place. As the House GOP is dealing with a razor thin majority, Baird's absence is also of concern for votes taking place. With the 218 to 213 majority, House Speaker Mike Johnson may have more difficulty getting the votes he needs to pass legislation as he is left with an effective 2-vote majority.
Johnson also made comment to House Republicans, per Politico. He said that Baird may be dealing with a spinal issue from the crash.
