Leading up to the map redraw several GOP state lawmakers publicly expressing skepticism about the new map.
The Indiana state Senate has rejected the new House map in a move countering President Donald Trump. The state legislative chamber rejected the map with a vote of 19-31 as the Trump administration has been pushing to have states redraw congressional lines ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Leading up to the map redraw, there had been several GOP state lawmakers publicly expressing skepticism about the new map.
The redraw of the map that had been proposed would have potentially added two more GOP seats in Congress in the 2026 midterms.
Alex Bruesewitz, an ally to Trump posted to X, “The spineless RINOs in Indiana, many hailing from districts where President Trump won by over 20% just last November have stabbed their own voters in the back and sold out America! We'll be launching primary challenges against every last traitor who voted no, effective immediately! Pack your bags, your time is up!”
The rejection of the map may be a setback for the president as other GOP states such as Texas have been working to redrawing their congressional lines to favor more GOP seats. According to Politico, the seats of two Democrats, Reps. Andre Carson and Frank Mrvan, are likely to be saved as a result of the failed vote.
Ahead of the vote, House Speaker said that the pushback from the state GOP lawmakers was not necessarily a setback, and then added, “I’ve got to deal with whatever matters are finally presented in each state, and we’re going to win. We’ve got a better record to run on."
Steve Bannon, who was livestreaming in Indiana, said of the vote, “People have to realize that we only have a couple opportunities. We’ve got a net five to 10 seats. If we don’t get a net 10 pickup in the redistricting wars, it’s going to be enormously hard, if not impossible, to hold the House.”
Historically, the party in power usually does worse in midterm elections. The Trump administration as well as some in the GOP have been pushing to gain more seats in Congress in order to hold onto its thin majority.
