President Joe Biden's brother, James Biden, will sit for a closed-door deposition just days before his nephew Hunter will testify in the president’s impeachment inquiry.
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer told the New York Sun that the committee's lawyers have reached an agreement to have James Biden the subject of a private deposition prior the Hunter Biden coming in to testify on Feb. 28.
James' deposition will be around Feb. 21, Comer told the outlet.
“I think we’ve got a good series of people coming in,” he said. “There are a couple more people that we want to bring in, so we’ve been sending letters, requesting them to come in. If they don’t then we’ll subpoena them.”
In recent weeks, Comer has been able to depose several of Hunter’s business associates such as his lawyer and friend Kevin Morris and business associates Rob Walker and Mervyn Yan.
James and Hunter were previously subpoenaed by the Oversight Committee in November 2023. Both failed to appear before the House lawmakers during their scheduled deposition dates in December.
Hunter, for his part, arrived in Washington DC not to appear for the deposition, but instead to speak to press outside the Capitol where he called the subpoena "illegitimate."
In January after the two skipped out on the depositions, the House Oversight Committee released a statement with regards to when Hunter Biden would testify later in February.
"As part of the impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, the Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary will conduct transcribed interviews with several Biden family members and associates in the coming weeks. The Committees are continuing to work with James Biden’s attorney to schedule his appearance."
The release from the committee added at the end, "Additional witnesses to be announced."
In October it was revealed that James had signed a $200,000 check over to President Biden and designated as a "loan repayment" in 2018. The check was issued the same day that Americore, a hospital that is no longer running, wired $200,000 to James' bank account. The president's brother had received a total of $600,000 in loans from Americore in 2018.
