On Tuesday night, Melania Trump announced her mother's passing. She had been attending her mother's bedside in recent weeks.

"It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija," Trump wrote. "Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity.  She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy."

Knavs was 78 years old. The former First Lady had missed the Christmas celebrations at Mar-a-Lago to care for her mother, and did not reveal a cause of death. However, former President Donald Trump had said that his mother-in-law was "very ill" on New Year's Eve, and that it had been a "tough" time for the family.

"Hopefully she'll be recovering," Trump had said on New Year's Eve. "It's a tough one, a very tough one."

Knavs was Slovenian, born in 1945, and was a textile worker when she met and married Melania's father, Viktor.
