On the morning of Election Day, when millions of Americans are heading to the polls to decide the makeup of the House and Senate heading into the final years of the Trump administration, the White House posted that the country “will never be a communist country.”
The White House posted, “You can be a communist or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both.” It included a graphic of Trump overlaid with the text, “America will never be a communist country.” The quote came from Trump in his message to America for its 250th birthday.
This comes as there is a multitude of socialist candidates running for office across the country this election cycle, from California to New York.
In New York City, both Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier are running for seats in the House, NY Congressional Districts 7 and 10, respectively. Valdez has said that “trans rights” and fighting for Mexicans during her time in office are priorities. Chevalier, who has come under fire for using a US flag as a napkin, has claimed that immigration enforcement violates the Constitution.
In Colorado, Melat Kiros is running for House in the state’s 1st Congressional District, defeating a 15-term incumbent Democrat during the primary. Kiros has come under fire for saying the US is to blame for 9/11 and has said that reparations are needed in the country to tackle white supremacy.
Chris Rabb is running for the House in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, which covers North and West Philadelphia. The district is one of the most Democratic in the nation, and during the primary, he secured endorsements from several prominent left-wing figures and organizations, including members of the “Squad” such as Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Pramila Jayapal.
Donavan McKinney is running to represent Michigan's 13th Congressional District in the House, defeating incumbent Democrat Shri Thanedar in the primary.
In the Senate, Angie Nixon is running to defeat incumbent GOP Senator Ashley Moody in Florida, defeating Democrat Alex Vindman in the primary. Running for Senate in Michigan is Abdul El-Sayed, and while not DSA-endorsed and claiming to not be a democratic socialist, El-Sayed has adopted a number of stances popular among the socialists, including Medicare for all and expanding the Supreme Court.
There are also socialists running for office in major cities across the country. In Los Angeles, socialist Nithya Raman is running to defeat incumbent Karen Bass for mayor of the city, while Janeese Lewis George is seeking to replace outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser in Washington, DC.
