Speaking alongside 2024 presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump on Friday afternoon, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that House Republicans are introducing legislation requiring voters to prove that they are Americans before they cast their ballot.

"What we’re going to do is introduce legislation to require that every single person who registers to vote in a federal election must prove that they are a citizen first. They have to prove it. that will be a new part of the federal law and a very important one."

"Our bill will establish new safeguards, it’ll put us on par with, by the way, with virtually every other democracy around the world that also prohibits noncitizen voting."

"And this is a critical thing for us to do at a very critical time."

He added that the bill will require states remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.

Johnson asked why Democrats would allow the chaos at the southern border, answering that it was "because they want to turn these people into voters."
