A military aircraft crashed near the Albuquerque International Sunport on Tuesday afternoon. The airport stated that the crash occurred on the south side of the airport's grounds.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Lt. Jason Fejer said that the crash occurred around 2 pm local time, and multiple local fire departments responded. He said the pilot was able to get out of the plane and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Two other civilians at the scene were assessed but not transported. The type of plane that crashed has not been confirmed.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller wrote on X, "Grateful for the rapid action of the first responders who arrived to the scene. Praying for the pilot."

The airport said that flight operations have resumed.

The pilot is said to have ejected himself from the plane before it caught fire, KOAT reported. One US official told the ABC News Pentagon Bureau that the plane was a new F-35 which belonged to the US Marine Corps, and that the plane was being transferred from Lockheed’s factory to be put into service.

The pilot at the time of the crash was reportedly a defense contract management agency pilot.
